In May of this year, farmers, Vietnamese government officials, and staff from the U.S. Embassy in Vietnam gathered in Nghe An province for the opening ceremony of an $8.5 million animal nutrition plant.

This ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the eleventh such event in Vietnam for the plant’s owner, Cargill, and was another milestone in the continuation of the key public-private sector collaborations that continue to supercharge economic growth in the country.

Agriculture and livestock production, two areas of that rapid growth, represent more than just a vital sector of the Vietnamese economy: the practices also embody a proud farming heritage that is embedded in the culture.

With that growth in the livestock market, demand for livestock feed has increased as well. The new plant will increase Cargill’s feed production capacity by an additional 66,000 metric tons per year, but more importantly for the local industry, the facility incorporates a superior approach to feed safety, ingredient quality and product integrity.

Promoting Feed Safety

In some countries of Asia, ensuring the safety and quality of food has proved challenging, and even served to engender public distrust of the government and private sector alike, therefore posing a challenge to the collaborations that have spurred many success stories.

By providing customers with safe, trusted feed that maximizes the performance of operations, the new Cargill feed plant not only stimulates further economic growth, but also serves to build public trust in the institutions and values that have created an environment conducive to growth.

An Enduring Commitment to Growth

Success in a market like Vietnam extends well beyond the “bottom line,” it also requires the promotion of responsible, sustainable, and collaborative practices.

As Sarena Lin, Cargill’s President of Global Feed and Nutrition puts it, “our success in Vietnam is an invigorating story of how we are able to grow our business in a country, and at the same time improve the livelihoods of thousands of farmers.” That success requires “working very closely with the government, customers, suppliers, provincial authorities, and farming communities,” added Ms. Lin.

For companies like Cargill, affirming a commitment to helping communities thrive while striving to build trust in the institutions and values underpinning Vietnam’s contemporary success requires an unwavering commitment.  As stated by Jorge Becerra, Cargill’s Managing Director for feed and nutrition in Vietnam, “in the face of a general slowdown in the Southeast Asia region, Vietnam’s economy continues to perform very well and foreign investments along with exports are on the rise.”

According to Le Minh Thong, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Nghe An Province, Cargill’s sustained commitment and role has been positive, and “helped create jobs and improve the income of local people.”
