Hawaiian Electric recently announced it is upgrading its electric vehicle fast-charging sites with new charging equipment.
This effort includes the replacement of fast-charging stations as well as the installation of additional chargers at locations with available capacity. Upgraded locations will debut new Tritium RTM chargers that will "significantly reduce instances of equipment failure," according to the announcement.
The first upgrade was recently completed at the Hawaii Kai 7-Eleven charging location on Oahu, and work on the Dole Plantation location is slated to be completed by mid-December. One more Oahu location and three Hawaii Island locations are expected to begin construction by early 2024, according to the announcement.
While upgrades are completed, each location will be out of service for approximately three to eight weeks. Updates on the charging station's upgrades will be available on Hawaiian Electric's website.
"With more than 26,000 electric vehicles on Hawaii’s roadways, it is important that EV drivers have access to a range of dependable charging options," Aki Marceau, director of electrification of transportation at Hawaiian Electric, said in a statement. "Our fast chargers allow EV drivers to quickly and conveniently add range to their vehicles while they’re running errands or grabbing a bite to eat."
