A 50,000-square-foot retail center in Waikiki reopened in July, following closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic and a multi-million dollar renovation.

Duty Free Shoppers Waikiki reopened in July, after closing in March of 2020 due to the decline in international travel during the Covid-19 pandemic, according to representatives of the company. The 50,000-square-foot retail space held its grand reopening on Sept. 14.

DFS Waikiki is part of the Hong Kong-based DFS Group, which has more than 50 locations on four continents, according to the group's website.

“We are excited to welcome back locals and visitors to our iconic Waikiki store, which has been inspired by the beauty and authenticity of the islands to reimagine the DFS Waikiki experience,” said Benjamin Vuchot, chairman and CEO of the DFS Group, in a written statement. "Hawaii is an important location for the DFS portfolio with its rich history and legacy in the islands. DFS is committed to continuing to introduce the best experience to Hawaii and its locations worldwide.”

The DFS Group is majority-owned by Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, with partial ownership from cofounder Robert Mille. The group employs about 5,000 people and sells perfumes, jewelry, watches, fashion, food and alcohol from luxury brands.

The retail space in Waikiki sells more than 100 luxury brands. DFS Waikiki also sells goods from more than 45 local businesses, including Jules & Gem, Ua Body, Lanikai Bath & Body, Wai Meli, Manoa Chocolate and Coco Moon.

The buildout of the new retail center — including infrastructure and technology upgrades — cost millions, according to representatives of DFS Waikiki. Malherbe was the design agency for the store in Waikiki.

“The grand reopening of DFS Waikiki marks a significant milestone in the world of luxury shopping in Hawaii,” said Vinay Lamba, president of DFS’ Asia Pacific and U.S. regions.

About 90% of the employees at the newly reopened retail center were former staff members, according to representatives of DFS Waikiki.

DFS Waikiki also includes a coffee shop, Bean About Town, whose owner, Olivier Vetter, started the business in London before moving to Hawaii with his wife. The first Bean About Town was established in Kaimuki and opened in April 2018.
