Philadelphia’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) workforce experienced 8.0% growth during the years 2015-2018. In comparison, STEM employment nationwide grew by only 5.9%, over 200 basis points (bps) less than that of the Philadelphia area. The STEM workforce in Philadelphia is expected to remain robust as the city cements itself as a center for life sciences and other research and development entities. Two areas within the city stand out as hubs for these companies: the Navy Yard, where GlaxoSmithKline, Wuxi AppTec and Adaptimmune are featured, and University City, where UPenn and Drexel University surround a booming neighborhood that houses the likes of Spark Therapeutics and Cambridge Innovation Center.
