SAN FRANCISCO MARKETFLASH

Where'd they go?

APRIL 6, 2021
Migration, like absorption, flows both ways as households move in and out of regions. In 2020 address changes originating from San Francisco county increased by 47% when compared with 2019 to total nearly 147,000 moves, according to data from the United States Postal Service. The greatest share of movement came from within San Francisco county as nearly 70,000 households capitalized on decreasing apartment rents and low mortgage rates to relocate within the city. Households, which can be as little as one person, that did move out of San Francisco county remained overwhelmingly in the Bay Area and within California. Households that moved out-of-state headed to well-known tech outposts such as Seattle, Manhattan, and Austin.
